Mike DeBonis Discusses How He Uses Social Media in Reporting on Local D.C.Politics
Mike DeBonis, a journalist for The Washington Post, sat down with eM&P to discuss how his job has changed in the electronic media era.
In 2007, DeBonis took over a weekly column for the Washington City Paper titled “Loose Lips.” Every week he would talk to his sources before writing a 2,000 word article summing up the weekly happenings in district politics.
“Loose Lips” was just a precursor to his current daily blog at The Washington Post called “DeMorning Debonis.” While the format was not new, the style was original to readers here in the DC area. DeBonis mentioned that real time news aggregation is as crucial to present day journalism, as it was when journalists were on a longer news cycle.
DeBonis is a good example of how a local journalist is expected to tweet, blog, and write articles simultaneously, all while trying to maintain their high journalistic standards.
